Artist: Julia Saint Amour
Message from the team:
“I’m Axel and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is called XV. XV exists to release your inner evil. I like to tackle issues in my art that most people see as taboo. My work is aimed at people who have that outside-the-box mentality. I also like gore and tacos!
The artist I worked with is Julia Saint Amour. Julia is an incredibly talented illustrator. Her style is cartoony, cutesy gore that is bright and colourful but also disturbing. Julia is a former OSF student and her biggest professional accomplishment to date is becoming a tattoo artist. More examples of her work can be found on her Instagram account @retromutilation.
I think Julia and I made a great match for this project since we are both into a creepy, dark style. For our piece, we decided to make a demon girl wearing OSF merch. I woodworked the board and did a black wash for the background. Julia hand painted the rest of the design in her distinct style.”
The Oasis Skateboard Factory (OSF) is an award-winning TDSB alternative high school program where at-risk youth earn credits and graduate by building and selling skateboards and running a small design business. For Oasis Skateboard Factory’s 10 year anniversary, students were partnered with professional artists to create a unique rolling work of art. From adding illustrations and paintings to creating sculptures from cut up decks, OSF students and their artist collaborators go beyond the skateboard form and into the realm of high art.
All boards on display will be displayed at CJ’s SKATEPARK from April 16th – May 9th and will be available for public auction on the online JBM auction site.
On May 9th, the online auction bids will transition to the live auction event at CJ’s SKATEPARK beginning at 7pm where there will be a cash bar serving wine and beer. Proceeds from the auction will go towards supporting OSF’s unique programming. Parking is free.
