The story of the Howard Greenberg Gallery, vividly chronicled by New York art writer Lyle Rexer; Greenberg’s reflections on selected works from his personal collection; and a chronology of the exhibition history of the gallery, have provided an unprecedented canvas on which to merge fine book making and photographic scholarship.
The Howard Greenberg Gallery is distinguished as one of the finest galleries of photography, and Rexer’s intimate knowledge of the lore of the New York art scene positions Greenberg as the gallery of “classic photography.” Passion and individuality are celebrated in the commemoration of an important gallery and a landmark book from the press.
The centrepiece of the book is a portfolio of 25 masterful photographs drawn from Greenberg’s personal collection. Each image is paired with Greenberg’s thoughtful assessments and recollections. As characterized by Michael Torosian in his introduction, “The portfolio is the synthesis of erudition and passion, a connoisseur’s survey, and it’s also a memoir, a look back at some of the touchstones that have made up a collection, a career and a life.”
Specifications
The text has been composed in lead in Kennerley Old Style on the C4 Intertype, with Parsons for display, and printed letterpress by hand on a Vandercook Universal III on Nideggen mould-made paper, a “sand”- coloured sheet with a unique laid pattern. The endpapers are “brick”- coloured Bugra, a mould-made sheet.
The 26 hand-tipped plates in the book have been meticulously printed in 10 micron stochastic four-colour offset lithography on Utopia Premium paper. Each plate is bordered in a matte grey ink and varnished.
The binding pattern was designed by Michael Torosian based on elements in Frantisek Drtikol’s photograph “Thorns”. Printed in 10 micron stochastic four-colour offset lithography on 100% rag Somerset paper. Spine bound in Asahi Japanese book cloth with paper label. Slipcase wrapped in “brick” coloured mould-made paper.
The book measures 7 7/8 x 11 1/8 inches; 104 pages. Printed in an edition of 250, of which 200 have been retained by the Howard Greenberg Gallery. September 2007.
