Student: Kayla
Artist: Mark Dudiak

Message from the team:

“My name is Kayla and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is U4iK. U4iK exists to alter your reality.

Mark Dudiak, who I collaborated with for this project, is a contemporary artist who works with paint, focusing on building and contrasting different layers and textures. Mark has been into making art as long as he can remember. His advice to young artists is to remember that things always change and that as different opportunities come up you will keep learning and growing in your art practice; while the art you make now is your best work, it will keep growing and getting better with each opportunity.

For our board concept, we decided to pair Mark’s layering style with U4iK colours. I pressed and woodworked the board and Mark executed the idea.”

Student: Kayla
Artist: Beth Alber

Message from the team:

“My name is Kayla and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is U4iK. U4iK exists to alter your reality.

I collaborated with Beth Albee for this constellation board. Beth is a retired professor and artist who works in sculpture and jewelry design. The constellation depicted is the Seven Sisters from Greek mythology. The sisters are daughters of Pleione, who was the protectress of sailing, which lead to how the stars were used frequently by sailors for navigation. The Seven Sisters were also friends with Artemis, who was a Greek huntress and protector of young girls.  We chose this constellation for a few reasons. First, it represents how women in the arts can benefit from guidance around navigating the systems of embedded discrimination in the art world. Stars and constellations are part of the natural world, which is itself feminized; by highlighting stars, the piece speaks to the power of the feminine. Finally, by showing this particular constellation, the power of women looking out for each other in the art world and beyond is reinforced.

The constellation is expressed with the led lights in the board, which I put in by drilling holes just big enough to fit them through. I installed the lights one at a time and then glued their wires and battery on the back to hold it all in place.”

Message from the team:

“My name is Jude and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is called BumRat. BumRat exists to fuse grunge punk and high fashion.

For this project, I worked with Chris Burns, aka Champstiles. Champstiles describes himself as a freelance human specializing in woodburning. He got into art and design by trying to find a new creative niche in the wood industry. His advice to young artists is to be professional and consistent and to also try to find your own niche.

Champstiles has been a bedrock collaborator and supporter of OSF from the very beginning of the program. Not only has he participated in every Gladstone show the school has put on, he also helped us pull off an award-winning exhibit in the COME UP TO MY ROOM show in 2017. Any wood burned board that comes out of OSF is a direct result of his tutelage and support, and the shape of the program would not be the same without Champstiles’ influence.”

Student: Jake
Artist: Rock

Message from the team:

“My name is Jake. I am a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory, and my brand is SkumBag Skateboards. SkumBag Skateboards exists to poke fun at societal issues and represent the skumbags that love skateboarding.

Rock is an artist and an arts educator. The mediums he uses are spray paint and ceramics. He produces big, colourful, and fun pieces of artwork in the form of graffiti and murals. His major artistic accomplishments are that he has painted graffiti in eight different countries, has been published in art books like ‘Graffiti World,’ and going back to school after ten years to finish an art degree. He went on after that to get a teaching degree as well.

One thing he wishes that someone had taught him when he was young is that “there are people who do, and people who talk. Then there’s people who do and talk.” His advice to young makers is, “Set goals, do what you say you’re going to do, and do stuff.”

The project that we worked on together was making a deck with a new graffiti version of “Oasis Skateboard Factory.” We did it in a graffiti writing style. The way we produced this was by using stencil with spray paint and paint markers. I pressed and woodworked the board and Rock and I both painted the image.”

Student: Alicia
Artist: Luke Parnell

Message from the team:

“I’m Alicia and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is Monstra Skateboards. Monstra Skateboards exists to inspire you to own your inner monster.

For my collaboration I worked with Luke Parnell. Luke is a multidisciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture and wood carving. Luke is Indigenous (his father is Haida and his mother is Nisga’a) and he draws inspiration from West Coast Indigenous art styles.

Luke and I came up with the concept of doing an eagle for this board. Luke brought in an eagle head he had carved from red cedar wood. I then used the eagle head as inspiration for the rest of the board, eventually settling on a simple, clean design with round, flowy lines. I positioned the eagle feet on the board in a way that makes it feel like the bird is about to land on you, the viewer.  This powerful bird in flight represents how I feel about attending OSF; it’s the first school I’ve been able to take flight without falling flat on my face.”

Message from the team:

“My name is Heron and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is called Skate Hero, and it’s magical.

For this piece, I collaborated with Kevin Dougherty, who is a financial executive working for an insurance company. In his personal creative life, he plays guitar and has had musical training since childhood. His advice to young people is, “Do what you love and love what you do.”

For this piece we decided to do an OSF themed board in my brand’s style. I designed and painted the image using tape stencil. The image of a man finding a literal oasis in the desert depicts a miracle akin to a student finding a safe space like Oasis Skateboard Factory.”

Student: Emily
Artist: Chief LadyBird

Message from the team:

“My name is Emily and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is called Sky Line Dreams.

I collaborated with Chief LadyBird for this piece. Chief LadyBird makes native art that incorporates traditional and modern styles. She works in digital, paint and drawing mediums. Chief LadyBird describes her art as storytelling that is honest and empowering. She is the first Indigenous artist to design an emoji for Twitter – a Turtle Island emoji for Indigenous History Month – and is also the creator of the Scholastic children’s book Nibi’s Water Song. Her advice to young artists is to not worry about what teachers say about your art style and to follow your heart and your own creative path.

For our board, we decided to do a 50/50 split. I originally planned to draw a fox for my side of the board, but as I began drawing, this beautiful woman materialized as well. Chief LadyBird then created her image to complement mine, mirroring her mentorship style with OSF students.”

Jasmin Liu, who I worked with for this project, attends OCAD University. She describes herself as a maker, woodworker, and an artist. The mediums she works in are woodworking, model making, and furniture. Jasmin got her start with art when she was young, as she says that she was always interested in making stuff, and she had a natural curiosity with how things work, as well as the taking apart and putting together of different things. Her major artistic accomplishments include graduating from OCADU with a degree in industrial design and doing work for the city of Toronto. Some advice she has to give to young artists is to “be open minded but stay true to your values, your style and yourself.”

Artist: Paul Aloisi

Message from the team:
“My name is Hari and I’m a student at Oasis Skateboard Factory. My brand is POPSK8!. POPSK8! exists to merge the worlds of cartoon, comic art, and sk8 culture.

The artist I worked with is Paul Aloisi. Paul describes himself as an interdisciplinary artist. He does work with murals, sculpture, and interactive art and combines a variety of media. I see his artwork as precise, mixed, and interactive. Some of his artistic accomplishments include getting a grant from the Ontario Arts Council and the Toronto Arts Council.

Paul got his start making art when he was gifted spray paint by one of his friends and started painting graffiti in his neighbourhood. Paul had a positive experience in high school and went on to attend OCAD University, George Brown College, and Ryerson University When he was young, Paul wishes that someone had taught him life skills, like how to do income tax. He advises young artists to know the economic value of their skills.

This board concept is based on an earlier board that Paul designed that featured multiple letters in a pleasing design. I saw it and suggested we do something similar with Xs to represent the 10 year anniversary.

I pressed the deck using Roarockit veneers and technology and then woodworked it. Paul cut the board with a bandsaw, applied a primer and then a black background. He then designed a cut-out vinyl sticker for the graphic.”
